About Damascus, Oregon
Damascus is an unincorporated community in Clackamas County, about 14 miles southeast of Portland. Briefly incorporated as a city from 2004 to 2016 before voters chose to dis-incorporate, Damascus retains a rural and semi-rural character with a population of around 10,000 spread across farmland, forested hills, and newer residential developments.
History of Damascus
Damascus was settled in the 1850s and named (according to tradition) after Damascus, Syria by early settlers. The area remained rural farmland and small acreages for most of its history. In 2004 it was incorporated to manage anticipated growth, but after 12 years of debate over development and governance, residents voted in 2016 to dis-incorporate, returning the area to unincorporated county status.
