About Lake Oswego, Oregon
Lake Oswego is a city of roughly 40,000 in Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington counties, about 8 miles south of downtown Portland. Built around the private Oswego Lake, the city is known for its wealth, excellent schools, upscale downtown, and long history as a fashionable suburb of Portland.
History of Lake Oswego
Lake Oswego began as an iron-smelting town in the 1860s and briefly produced most of the iron used on the West Coast. After the iron industry collapsed in the 1890s, the area transitioned to residential development. Oregon Iron & Steel Company developed Lake Oswego as a planned recreational community in the 1920s, creating the private lake district that defines the city today. Lake Oswego consolidated its current boundaries through a 1960 merger with the town of Oswego.
