About Oregon City, Oregon
Oregon City is a city of roughly 37,000 in Clackamas County, about 13 miles south of downtown Portland along the Willamette River. Historically significant as the end of the Oregon Trail and the first incorporated city west of the Rocky Mountains, Oregon City combines deep history with a revitalized downtown and the dramatic Willamette Falls.
History of Oregon City
Oregon City was founded in 1829 at the site of Willamette Falls by John McLoughlin, the chief factor of the Hudson's Bay Company. It was the end of the Oregon Trail for thousands of pioneers in the 1840s and 1850s, and served as the capital of the Oregon Territory until 1851. Oregon City was the first incorporated city west of the Rocky Mountains (incorporated in 1844). Willamette Falls powered early sawmills, paper mills, and eventually one of the first long-distance transmission of electricity in the world.
