History of Washougal
Washougal was one of the first areas settled by non-Native Americans in Washington state, dating to the 1840s. The name is believed to come from a Chinookan word meaning 'rushing water,' referring to the Washougal River. The city grew around lumber mills and the Pendleton Woolen Mills, which has operated in Washougal since 1912 and remains a major employer.
